9. Make diversity practical

Workshop participants encourage making diversity a practical matter at work. Accommodating gender, ethnic, disability and religious diversity could thus involve policies and concrete actions that take the issue of tolerance and embracing difference above the level of rhetoric.

Among their suggestions are:

  • Breastfeeding rooms and breaks for new mothers
  • On-site nursery schools
  • Flexible working hours and team arrangements allowing parents to work from home
  • Dedicated prayer rooms
  • Wheel-chair accessible buildings, closed captioning for webcasts, large or braille print documents where relevant
  • Use of metrics to break down the numbers that show any trends with respect to recruitment and promotion of different categories of staff

How is diversity concretely accommodated in your team?
