10. Make leadership accessible

Linked to flattening the hierarchy, weakening bureaucracy, and encouraging participation, is the idea of making leadership accessible.

Participants advocate that leaders should show emotional intelligence and mentor staff, as well as shed the formal trappings of rank, and ensure regular interaction with staff for the free flow of ideas. In addition, leadership should be viewed not as a function of rank but also open to staff members at any level wishing to make a contribution.

Some suggestions are:

  • Encouraging personal-level guidance of staff at work
  • Forums for leaders to discuss values and practical application of specific relevant values in the team or section context e.g. accountability
  • Channels for staff members to showcase their ideas
